The Gavin Barras Quintet released their debut album in 2012. The ‘Day of Reckoning’ refers to when the music was composed for the album, over the two days of the London/Manchester riots of 2011. The inspiration for the title track came from those days. The feeling of insecurity, foreboding and general fear of the lawlessness happening on the streets. The music depicts those themes. Other inspiration came from some of the great ‘avant-guard’ jazz musicians such as Andrew Hill, Eric Dolphy, Bobby Hutcherson and Jackie Mclean. The compositions involve large open ended improvisation sections which are totally reliant on the free thinking musicians in the quintet. Joining Gavin in the group are saxophonist Ed Jones, Corey Mwamba on vibraphone, Steve Plews on piano and Dave Walsh on drums. Music from the album can be previewed and purchased below.
